Petition: Our Health Before Their Profits – The Nutri-Score Must Finally Become Mandatory
The Nutri-Score is now one of the most extensively documented public health tools in Europe: more than 150 scientific studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in improving the population’s nutritional status and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers and type 2 diabetes.
But to be truly useful, the Nutri-Score needs to be visible on all foods. Yet since its creation in 2017, its display has relied solely on the voluntary commitment of manufacturers. While some companies have chosen transparency, other major groups continue to refuse to use it, depriving consumers of clear and accessible information.
This situation represents a major missed opportunity for public health. Above all, it highlights the need to make Nutri-Score labelling mandatory, so that the public interest is no longer overshadowed by economic interests.
On December 4, during discussions on the Social Security Financing Bill, members of parliament rejected the amendments aimed at making the Nutri-Score mandatory (120 votes against 117). A narrow majority… with heavy consequences. This vote marks a step backwards for public health, a dismissal of scientific expertise, and a worrying signal sent to patients—one that once again benefits the food industry lobbies.
In response to this decision, we must take action.
As citizens, as patients, and as committed health advocates, we call on political leaders to reconsider their position.
